LeanPPD Model

The LeanPPD model is centralized on the concept of Set Based Concurrent Engineering (SBCE). According to the LeanPPD partners, this Product Development (PD) process model can revolutionize the traditional point-based engineering model that many European companies are using to develop new products. SBCE enables maximum value and eliminates design rework starting from early in a design process.

To support SBCE, the LeanPPD model incorporates other enablers and tools:

  • A PD process lean assessment tool, called LeanPPD Transformation Toolkit (Lean T2). Based on the definition of value-added (VA) an non-value-added (NVA) activities in PD, this tool can be used by any industrialist to assess the level of “leanness” within their PD process, identify areas for enhancement and monitor continuous improvement.
  • A Product Development Value Mapping Tool (PD-VMT), with particular focuses on value creation and waste elimination in product development. This is a modelling and mapping tool, to be used by industrial users to define and improve their processes according to the lean principles. It has been specifically designed to map and model VA and NVA activities within a PD process.
  • Set Based Lean Design Tool (SBLDT). This tool is a composition of lean methods and techniques to be applied during product design, and ensures lean manufacturing compatibility.
  • A Knowledge Based Engineering (KBE) environment. This is an advanced environment for supporting knowledge creation, acquisition and re-use in the PD process and throughout the whole product lifecycle. A3 sheets and KBE demos will constitute this tool.
